What to wear to kickboxing: a simple outfit guide

Your first kickboxing class is booked and you're staring at the wardrobe like it's a date. Sports leggings? Shorts? Shoes? Do you need gloves already? Slow down. The outfit doesn't have to be complicated. It does have to move with you.

Here's exactly what to wear to kickboxing as a woman. From sports bra to shorts, bare feet to shin guards, wraps to gym bag. Practical, honest, no fuss.

In short

  • The best women's kickboxing outfit is a solid sports bra, a breathable top, flexible shorts or leggings, and proper protection.
  • On the mats you usually go barefoot. Always check your gym's rules.
  • Wraps and gloves are not luxury. They protect hands, wrists and knuckles.
  • Pick kit that stays put on kicks, turns, burpees and pads. Too loose or too tight works against you.
  • Always bring a towel, water and clean wraps. Future you will thank you.

What's the best kickboxing outfit for women?

The best outfit sits tight enough not to slide, and flexible enough for high kicks, knees and fast combinations.

Kickboxing asks a lot of your clothes. You step, turn, kick, punch, sweat, and sometimes hit a plank because the coach decided you still had energy. You don't want a top that crawls up on every jab, shorts that pinch on a low kick, or a bra that's only for Sunday yoga.

A solid base:

  • A high-support sports bra, especially for bag work, sparring or fitness blocks.
  • A breathable sports top, fitted or semi-fitted, so your coach can see your posture.
  • Flexible shorts, kickboxing shorts or leggings with room around the hips.
  • Wraps and boxing gloves, because your hands take a beating.
  • A mouthguard and shin guards once you spar or do partner work with contact.

At Hypest we often see women start in regular gym kit, then quickly learn what works. A loose top catches on gloves. A cotton shirt gets heavy with sweat. Leggings without a firm waistband drop exactly when you throw a kick. Not cute. Very educational.

Tip: do a mini test at home. Three squats, two high knees, a front kick, a few fast punches. If the outfit already annoys you, it won't be love in the gym.

Which sports bra and top for kickboxing?

For kickboxing you want a high-support bra with wide straps and a top that wicks sweat and stays put.

A kickboxing bra has to handle more than a quiet strength session. You skip, run warm, do burpees, slip punches and rotate the upper body constantly. Go for compression, solid cups, or a mix. Wide straps spread pressure. A racerback can feel nice because your arms move freely.

On the top it's fabric and fit. Polyester, polyamide and elastane dry faster than cotton. Cotton feels soft at first, then holds sweat. After twenty minutes on the bag it's a wet towel. Pick a technical sports fabric.

Fitted or loose?

A fitted or close top is often easiest. Your coach sees if shoulders are relaxed, if the guard stays high, if the torso turns on the cross. An oversized shirt can work, but don't half-tuck and hope. On pads, loose fabric gets irritating.

Tip: like a crop? Fine. Just check it stays on hooks, knees and sprawls. You're there to train, not to yank your top every round.

Do you need kickboxing shorts?

You don't have to. Shorts, kickboxing shorts or flexible leggings all work if they stay up and let you kick.

Shorts give air and room for high kicks. Leggings feel secure and cover more. Pick what you'll actually wear twice a week. A waistband that stays put matters more than the label.

Piece When it helps Watch
High-support bra Bag, pads, fitness blocks Wide straps, no bounce
Technical top Every class Stays down on jabs and sprawls
Shorts or kickboxing shorts Hot rooms, high kicks Don't ride up
Leggings If you want more cover Firm waist, stretch at the hip
Wraps and gloves Every session with impact Fit first, colour second

On the mats most gyms want bare feet. Trainers or indoor shoes only if the gym says so. Check once, then pack the same every time.

Finish the kit with gloves that actually fit. Our Hypest Burgundy Knockout boxing gloves are built for women's hands. Add wraps like the Hypest Bloody Burgundy wraps and a Hypest mouthguard once you do contact.

Questions you probably have

What should I wear to my first kickboxing class?

A high-support bra, a breathable fitted top, flexible shorts or leggings, and clean indoor shoes or bare feet if the gym says so. Ask if you can borrow gloves. Bring water and a towel.

Do I need special kickboxing shorts?

No. Shorts or stretchy leggings both work if they stay up on kicks. A firm waistband matters more than the name on the tag.

Can I wear a regular sports bra?

If it is high support, yes. A light yoga bra often isn't enough once you skip, punch and kick.

What protection do I need?

Wraps and boxing gloves for almost every class. Mouthguard and shin guards once you spar or do partner contact. Ask the gym what they want in class one.
