Women's kickboxing shin guards: how to pick size and fit

Good kickboxing shin guards shouldn't look pretty in your bag. They should stay put while you kick, block and move.

The right size and fit actually matter. Too big slides. Too small pinches. Both feel irritating the moment you just want to train. Here's how to pick women's kickboxing shin guards by shin length, calf, closure, material and level. Practical, no fuss.

In short

  • Measure shin length from just below the knee to just above the ankle, not the whole leg.
  • A good fit sits snug, doesn't pinch, and doesn't rotate on low kicks.
  • Women's models are often narrower or lighter. The right size still beats the label.
  • Pick material and closure based on how often and how hard you train.
  • Always dry shin guards well, or you get smell, wear and gym-bag drama.

Which size women's kickboxing shin guards do you need?

You pick the right size by measuring shin length and calf, then checking the brand's chart.

A lot of women look at height or clothing size first. Fair. Shin guards work a bit differently. The shin should be covered, the instep protected, and the guard shouldn't shove into the knee. If the top edge digs into the back of the knee on a kick, it's too long. If shin is still bare at the bottom, it's too short.

Use a flexible tape. Stand up. Measure from just under the kneecap to just above the ankle joint. Then the widest part of the calf. For women that ratio varies: short shins with strong calves, long legs with slim calves. At Hypest we often see women stuck between S and M. Calf usually decides.

Height Often chosen Check extra
Up to 160 cm XS or S Top edge doesn't hit the knee
160–170 cm S or M Calf: if it's strong, size up
170 cm+ M or L Instep still covered when you kick

Try them on with the socks you'll train in. Strap them as you would in class. Throw a slow low kick. If they rotate, they're too loose or the wrong shape.

Tip: the label "women's" is not a size. Measure. Then pick the pair that stays put.

Gloves still matter on kickboxing days. Our Hypest Burgundy Knockout boxing gloves are built for women's hands. Outfit: what to wear to kickboxing.

Questions you probably have

How do I measure for shin guards?

Shin length from just below the knee to just above the ankle, plus the widest calf. Compare to the brand chart. Don't use clothing size alone.

Should I buy women's shin guards?

If they fit your calf and stay put, yes. Size and closure matter more than the word "women" on the pack.

They slide when I kick. Why?

Too big, straps too loose, or the shape doesn't match your calf. Tighten, or try a size down / a different last.

Do I need them for class one?

Ask the gym. Pads and bag often don't need them. Partner kicks and sparring usually do.
