You're in combinations, breathing is good, the coach calls one more round and bam: your ponytail whips straight into your eye. Done with that hair chaos.
Hair that stays put in kickboxing sounds simple until you sweat, jump, clinch, kick and keep moving your head. Here's which styles last, which hair bits actually work, and how to avoid breakage without spending twenty minutes on it.
In short
- A tight braid or boxer braids stay put best in kickboxing.
- Use soft elastics without metal, scrunchies, or sports bands with grip.
- Don't tie wet hair tight. Wet hair breaks faster.
- Curls do better in a low braid, a satin scrunchie or a buff.
- Too tight is not tough. It loads the roots for no reason.
Which hairstyle stays in during kickboxing?
The best kickboxing hairstyle sits flat to the head, has no loose bits, and doesn't rub when you move.
At Hypest we see a lot of women start with a high ponytail. Fair. Fast. During burpees, low kicks and pads that tail often becomes a whip. Not useful, not cute, sometimes just annoying. Especially with long or thick hair.
The most reliable option is boxer braids: two tight plaits from the hairline back. They stay close, spread the pull, and don't get in the way in stance, clinch or floor work. A braided ponytail also works: make a normal tail, then braid the length. That stops hair flying.
Shorter hair often does better in a low mini-tail plus a sports band than a high pony. Layers at the front? Clip them with small slides without sharp edges, or a wide band with silicone grip.
Tip: test at home with 30 seconds of jumping jacks and 10 burpees. If it already comes loose, it won't survive class.
| Style | Stays put | Best for | Watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boxer braids | Best | Long and thick hair | Don't yank the roots |
| Braided pony | Very good | Most lengths | Braid the tail so it doesn't whip |
| High pony only | Often slips | Quick days | Becomes a whip on kicks |
| Low tail + band | Good | Shorter hair, layers | Band with grip, not a fashion one |

Questions you probably have
Is a high ponytail enough?
Sometimes. On kicks and burpees it often turns into a whip. Braid the tail or go boxer braids if it annoys you.
Wet hair in a tight bun?
Don't. Wet hair breaks faster. Dry it a bit, then a softer hold.
What elastics?
Soft, no metal. Scrunchies or sports elastics. Fashion ones with bits snap and snag.
Short hair?
A grip band and clips for the front. You don't need a full braid.
