Women's boxing glove size: how to measure your hands and pick a fit

Gloves that are too big feel like oven mitts. Too small crush your knuckles. The right size feels firm, safe, and like you're ready to put the bag in its place.

Here's how to measure your hand, what oz means, which women's boxing glove size you usually need, and how to check the fit is actually good. No guessing. A tape, wraps, and a bit of boxing sense.

In short

  • Boxing gloves are measured in oz (ounces). 1 oz is 28.35 grams.
  • Measure hand circumference just under the knuckles, without the thumb.
  • Use body weight and hand size together, not only one of them.
  • Always try them with wraps on. Wraps take space and change the fit.
  • Bag and pads often 10–12 oz. Sparring usually 14–16 oz.

Which boxing glove size do women need?

You pick women's boxing glove size from body weight, hand circumference and what you train.

Glove size is not S, M or L. It's oz. That's weird the first time. Charts often run from 4 oz to 20 oz in steps of 2. Higher oz usually means a heavier glove and more padding.

At Hypest we often see this: your hand is narrower than a lot of unisex gloves, and you still want enough protection around knuckles and wrist. That's why a women's fit is nice. It closes tighter around the hand without stuffing the fingers.

A rough rule is about 1 oz per 5 kg of body weight. Around 55–65 kg you often land on 12 oz for regular training. Not a holy law. A woman of 58 kg with wide hands and thick wraps may sit better in 14 oz. A woman of 62 kg with narrow hands may train perfectly in 12 oz.

More basics: how to choose boxing gloves as a woman. This piece is the measuring guide.

How do you measure your hand for boxing gloves?

Measure by wrapping a tape around the palm, just under the knuckles, without the thumb.

Use a flexible tape. No tape? Use string, then a ruler. Measure your dominant hand. That one is often a bit bigger.

Four steps

  1. Open the hand relaxed, don't spread it like a high five.
  2. Tape around the palm, just under the knuckles.
  3. Leave the thumb out.
  4. Note centimetres, then check the brand chart plus your weight and training type.
Training Often chosen Why
Bag and pads 10 or 12 oz Lighter, faster, enough padding for most women
All-round / mixed 12 oz Safe default if you do a bit of everything
Sparring 14 or 16 oz More padding for your partner. Gym rules first

Always wrap before you judge the fit. Our Hypest Burgundy Knockout boxing gloves are built for women's hands. Wraps: Hypest Bloody Burgundy wraps. 10 vs 12 oz: 10 oz vs 12 oz.

Questions you probably have

What does oz mean?

Ounces. It is the weight of the glove, and usually how much padding you get. Not the same as clothing size.

Should I size up for wraps?

Try them with wraps on. If they only fit bare, they're too small for class.

My fingers have room. Is that bad?

A little room is fine. If they slide around on impact, go down or pick a narrower last.

Sparring gloves for the bag?

You can. They feel heavier. For bag and pads many women prefer 10 or 12 oz. Follow the gym for sparring.
